Miley Cyrus made music industry history this week by becoming the first female musician to receive the No. 1 spot on every track on her album, “Plastic Hearts,” on the iTunes charts.
With major hits from her rock-inspired album like “Plastic Hearts” and “Angels Like You,” Miley Cyrus has continued to be the face of the industry and mainstream pop music, said Sydney Cramer, a student of first year in biomedical laboratory science.
“It has this really nostalgic sound while still being present and still being the type of music that people want to listen to,” said Saanya Advani, criminal justice official.
Beginning as the blond-haired child star, Cyrus shifted his sound from teenage pop to raspy-voiced rock. Cyrus growing with her audience has led to her continued success, Advani said.
“We grew up with her,” said junior journalist Norene Bassin. “We watched her start out on Disney. We watched her go through it trying to get out of the Disney phase. We watched her find herself.
Bassin, who was so inspired by the artist that they named their dog Miley, said the pop star is able to stay relevant in the ever-changing industry by knowing how to keep up with trends in her pop and rap style. from the early 2010s to his new rock revival featured on Plastic Hearts.
“It’s not like anything she’s done before,” Bassin said. “I see it as kind of a statement of sorts. She’s stating that this is her music. This is her life. This is how she wants to make her art.”
With the success of her classic rock covers like “Heart of Glass,” her fans asked the star for more rock music, and she responded with “Plastic Hearts.” Her fans were captivated by the sound and sent every song to the top of the charts.
“She has the perfect voice for this type of rock music,” Advani said.
However, with many female artists rising to fame over the years, such as Beyoncé, Rihanna and Taylor Swift, music fans are wondering how Miley was the first to break this record.
More heinous allegations suggest nepotism and simply being a Cyrus is the answer, Cramer said.
“She just has family in the business… Isn’t Dolly Parton her godmother? That helps a lot with a drop of nepotism,” Bassin said.
However, Advani said this was simply because her music attracted more audiences, she was able to change her music quickly, and the change was welcomed by the music community.
While passing on the success of other artists, Cyrus also pays homage to those who created the sound she honed as hers now. Singer Billy Idol is one of the many features of “Plastic Hearts”, only encouraging wider audiences like older rock fans to listen to the tracks while acknowledging those who came before her in the industry.
While her album centered around finding herself and her own style, Cyrus found much more than that: a platform to prove that women are just as relevant on the charts in an age of today.
“It’s super big, especially as a woman,” Cramer said. “It shows girl power.”
Although a big step, he uncovered another layer of the glass ceiling that has yet to be broken at influential media companies, Advani said.
“It’s sad, but it’s also the reality,” Advani said. “It’s a welcome change that there are more women in the industry who are absolutely killing it. We need more.”
Breaking away from her Hannah Montana persona, Cyrus has now made space for herself as a role model for upcoming female superstars.
“She inspires the next wave of female pop stars by saying that even if you start everything commercialized and Disney-fied, you can break that image. You can become yourself at your own pace,” Bassin said.
The album “Plastic Hearts” was so successful because it depicts the story of a girl who learned to express herself through her art without restrictions, from male artists to industry normals.
“She’s completely herself,” Advani said. “She’s not trying to change for anyone and she’s doing what she loves and I think it’s really inspiring for young girls to see that you can say whatever you want, do whatever you want. You don’t don’t have to conform to anyone’s ideals or back down just because you’re a woman.”
