Microsoft is testing the inclusion of ads in the Windows 11 Start menu.
The ads will appear in the Recommended section of the Start menu, a place usually reserved for file recommendations. Now the section will suggest apps from the Microsoft Store.
Currently, ads will only appear to Windows Insiders in the US beta channel and will only appear on consumer devices, not on devices managed by an organization.
If you prefer not to see ads, you can also turn them off by going to Settings > Personalization > Start and turning off the “Show recommendations for tips, app promotions and more” button.
In a blog post announcing the test, Microsoft added a reminder that it regularly tests new experiences and concepts that might never be released. Those testing the feature are asked to provide feedback on how and if they like it.
The experience will first be available to a small number of Insiders on the Beta Channel.
This isn’t the first time Microsoft has experimented with new places to place ads. In March last year, the company tested the inclusion of advertisements in File Explorer.

Earlier this year, the company also began advertising Windows 11 in pop-up ads aimed at users who are still using Windows 10.
Although the company has a history of introducing advertisements into its operating system, it also offers a way to disable them, if you prefer not to see them.
