Earlier this year, Newcastle made contact with Paris Saint-Germain to explore the possibility of signing Keylor Navas.
The Magpies sensed an opportunity after the Costa Rican international lost his place in the starting XI to Gianluigi Donnarumma, on the back of Italy’s EURO 2020 tournament winner.
Newcastle have since signed Nick Pope to keep the ball out of the net, but now there has been an interesting development involving Navas in Paris.
What is the story?
Well, the 35-year-old doesn’t want to play second fiddle to Donnarumma anymore.
Christophe Galtier – who recently replaced Mauricio Pochettino – has told the media he respects the wishes of the three-time Champions League winner and revealed some clubs are keen to steer him away from PSG.
The Frenchman hasn’t named any team in particular, although it can’t be ruled out that Newcastle are among them after their investigation earlier in 2022.
Navas made 26 appearances in all competitions last season, although he was sidelined for the crucial Champions League knockout ties against Real Madrid, as well as a string of other important fixtures .
Nevertheless, the Costa Rican remains a superb goalkeeper, who had the misfortune to be replaced by Thibaut Courtois at Real Madrid, and now by Donnarumma at the Parc des Princes.
Newcastle should sign Keylor Navas
If the opportunity arises, Newcastle should bring Navas to Tyneside.
Of course, Martin Dubravka is an excellent assistant for Pope, although Eddie Howe would have told the Slovakia international he could leave St James’ Park – Manchester United would have been interested.
Leicester were also credited with an interest, after losing Kasper Schmeichel to OGC Nice.
A goalkeeper like Navas isn’t often available so Newcastle would be foolish to ignore him – keep an eye on this situation as the veteran glovemaker looks set to make a move shortly.
