LG’s G series should soon be withdrawn in favor of the next “Velvet” range, but the company does not intend to abandon the old models in terms of software support. The 2018 LG G7 ThinQ, for example, is slated to receive the Android 10 update in the third quarter of 2020. Although we don’t know the exact date for OTA deployment, LG has now shared the Android 10 kernel sources for a few variants of the operator brand of LG G7.
LG G7 ThinQ XDA Forums
In February 2020, LG launched public beta testing of Android 10 for the Korean variant LG G7 (model number LMG710N). They also released the Android 10 kernel source for the phone to their open-source code distribution repository, but deleted it after awhile for an unknown reason. This time, the new set of kernel source packages is for Verizon and T-Mobile variants (LMG710VM and LMG710TM / TMP respectively).
Interestingly, LG Korea plans to deliver the non-beta version of LG UX 9.0 above Android 10 for the LG G7 ThinQ in Q2 2020, well before the global rollout. The availability of the kernel source, however, does not necessarily indicate an early arrival of the OTA outside their country of origin. LG could take several months to deploy the stable version of Android 10 for the LG G7 ThinQ, just as they did with the Android Pie update.
The updated kernel source codes are really beneficial for aftermarket developers, who can use them to fix bugs in existing ROMs and custom kernels. LG officially authorizes only the European variant of LG G7 (model number LMG710EM) to unlock the bootloader, but it is now possible to unlock other variants (with the exception of the T-Mobile variant) using a method developed by the community. An unofficial version of LineageOS 17.1 for this phone is also available on our forums as a viable alternative for users who want to migrate away from the skin of LG.
