Laser rust removal is the closest thing we’ve seen to real magic. It makes this rusty old Toyota 4Runner look like it just rolled off the assembly line.
YouTube channel I Am Detailing recently had the opportunity to perform a thorough detail and aesthetic refurbishment on a third-generation 4Runner, using all the sophisticated tools at their disposal to achieve it. After removing the dirt and oil using dry ice, the channel turns to a high-powered, 1,000-watt laser cleaning machine that, according to the video’s description, costs upwards of six figures.
The laser wearer leaves no stone unturned, going through every inch of the underside and wheel wells to remove every iota of rust from this 4Runner. In addition to all the protection of the underbody and monocoque structure, they also laser remove surface rust found on brake rotors, calipers and, in the rear, drum housings. It’s all incredibly satisfying to watch.
After the laser treatment, the 4Runner undergoes a thorough round of washing, paint correction, detailing and ceramic coating. And based on the finished product, it appears the shop also repainted all the underbody panels that had their paint stripped off by the laser cleaner.
The result is a 30-year-old 4Runner that looks like it has stood through time without ever having been driven. All metals, plastics and painted panels appear impeccable. We are jealous of whoever takes delivery of this SUV. Hopefully they’ll continue to use it the way Toyota intended: as an off-road tank ready to go anywhere.
