Johnny Depp has a powerful and allegedly dangerous new friend in Saudi Arabia, the crown prince Mohammed bin Salman – and their relationship is described as a “romance like no other”.
The seemingly odd couple is detailed in a new profile in Vanity Fair …who claims Johnny gets the royal treatment in Saudi Arabia.
MBS hosted JD in the Saudi Kingdom for nearly 2 months last year, hosting Johnny in royal palaces and flying him around in helicopters, yachts and a private plane… according to Vanity Fair.
Unsurprisingly, it seems that money is a big factor in this “bromance”… Johnny is filming films in Saudi Arabia as he awaits a potential 7-figure deal to make him one of the world’s cultural ambassadors from the country.
MBS and the Saudis have tried to intrude into all kinds of global industries as part of MBS’s grand plan to overshadow reported human rights abuses in his country…and the crown prince has invested big in cinema.
Johnny and MBS reportedly began their friendship in July 2022, while Depp was filming “Jeanne du Barry,” a Saudi-financed film.
Since then, they have grown closer, to the point that Johnny says he felt comfortable enough to question MBS about the murder of the Washington Post journalist. Jamal Khashoggi.
The VF profile says MBS told Depp he didn’t order Khashoggi’s dismemberment, but took responsibility for it… saying he just wanted the journalist arrested because Khashoggi was become a rogue agent working to undermine the country.
Johnny definitely seems to believe what MBS is selling in terms of a cultural revolution in Saudi Arabia.
Depp tells VF… “While I admit I was somewhat naive at first about what was happening in the region, I have since personally witnessed the cultural revolution taking place there.”

JD added: “I had the opportunity to meet people from various parts of the region who were very welcoming and shared their culture, traditions and stories with me.”
Saudi Arabia is also funding Depp’s next attempt at making a film… a biopic about the Italian artist Amédée Modigliani featuring Al Pacino.
There are some connecting threads here – both men are remaking their public images…but it seems doubtful they would be friends if MBS wasn’t spending insane amounts of oil money.
