Ryan Garcia told Jake Paul he didn’t drink beer on the scale before his fight with Devin Haney.
The seemingly out of control boxer said it was a mixture of apple juice and soda water.
Garcia was scheduled to challenge Haney for the WBC super lightweight title on Saturday, live on talkSPORT, before dropping 3.2 pounds in weight.
The fight will still go ahead without the belt after promoters scrambled to secure a new deal at the last minute.
At a chaotic weigh-in on Friday, the 25-year-old did little to allay widespread concerns about his mental health ahead of the biggest fight of his career.
Garcia drank a bottle of beer, celebrated the news of his lack of weight, prayed as the two camps faced off on stage and hurled insults at the crowd during a fiery interview.
The American told media there was alcohol in the bottle, but later told a different story to YouTuber-turned-boxer Paul during a video call.
“It was apple juice and sparkling water,” he tells Paul in a video posted to TikTok by Betr.
“I almost poured it, and we were like, ‘Look, people are going to go crazy over this shit.’
Paul, who has argued with Garcia and reported him in the past, responded: “I thought it was real!”
WARNING: Strong language
Garcia also took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to suggest there was no alcohol in the beer bottle.
He wrote: “Apple juice and sparkling water HEHE”.
Garcia promised to pay Haney $500,000 for every pound he weighed over the 140-pound limit.
Both fighters insisted it was honored and that the botched weigh-in cost Garcia $1.5 million, as well as his first shot at a world title.
However, reports claim that Garcia will actually pay $600,000 and 2 percent of his PPV raise, with both men simply keeping up appearances under the new contract.
In a series of erratic tweets, Garcia said: “Why should I force myself to gain weight so I can be weak. No, I’m here to win. That’s all.”
He added: “I feel good and I had a three pound advantage. Let’s go hahahahaa. Winners do what they have to do, I’m still sharp.”
Devin Haney vs. Ryan Garcia will be live on talkSPORT starting at 4 a.m. Sunday morning.
