Samsung Galaxy smartphones have an AI-enhanced effect that quickly simulates time-lapse video that would normally take a full 24 hours to capture.
Samsung Galaxy smartphones come with a special 24-hour time-lapse feature that uses advanced image processing technology to achieve this faster than would normally be possible. Time-lapse videos often provide some of the most dramatic effects possible, squeezing minutes, hours and, in this case, an entire day into seconds.
With a Samsung Galaxy phone, capturing standard time-lapse video is as easy as switching to Hyperlapse mode, hitting the shutter button, and waiting. However, it previously required a special device called an intervalometer that told the camera how long to wait between shots. To condense an hour period into a minute, perhaps to capture the sunset, the interval should be set to take a photo every two minutes for an hour. Then the 30 photos could be compiled together and played at the standard rate of 30 frames per second to create a one-minute video.
Samsung has given Galaxy smartphones an advanced AI-enhanced feature called Scene Relighting which can generate a 24-hour time-lapse video effect while using a single outdoor shot and the effect is quite pleasing, subtly changing color and mood. shading to make it look like the lighting changes to sunset tones, night falls on the scene and a new day begins with morning light. The feature is in the Gallery app. To start the process, look for the “quick clock” icon at the bottom right of a compatible outdoor photo. twitter user ice universe shared an example of the generated video in a thread that includes a screenshot showing the icon to search for.
How Galaxy Stage Relighting Works
Samsung’s Scene Relighting effect creates video that simulates a full 24-hour day-to-night sequence by using a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) to adjust the color and shading of different parts of the image. The result is saved in the gallery as a 12 second video. Samsung says the Scene Relighting effect is available for Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold, Z Flip, Note 20, S20, S21 and S22 series phones. However, some have claimed that the effect also works on older Samsung phones with One UI 3.1.1.
Since all video is based on a still image, nothing will move in the scene. It’s just a lighting effect, although it’s very convincing when applied to the right photo. It is important to be aware of the limitations. For example, keeping people and animals out of frame will provide the best effect. Likewise, ocean waves will be calmed, spoiling the effect somewhat, however, gentle lakes or streams might work well. Since a Samsung The Galaxy smartphone applies this effect in the gallery, these decisions don’t have to be made at the time the photos are taken, making it easier to browse later to find a good subject for a 24 hour time-lapse.
