MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) – A former NBA basketball player will travel to Meridian to be honored by the city for his accomplishments.

City Council has approved that all basketball courts in Highland Park be named after basketball star Derrick McKey. “Derrick McKey Basketball Courts” will be the new name when the city holds the ceremony in his honor.

McKey has played with the Seattle Supersonics, Indiana Pacers and is in the University of Alabama Hall of Fame.

“He’s from Meridian. I always say let’s give them their flowers while they’re still here. I think he was an inspiration to people who went through Meridian High. He graduated from Meridian High School in 1984. He motivated me to play in the NBA. I said if he can do it, then I can too, so it’s an honor,” Parks and Recreation Director Thomas Adams said.

The event will take place on October 21 at noon in Highland Park.
