Harvey Elliott has signed a new, improved long-term contract at Liverpool just a year after signing a five-year contract.
The 19-year-old impressed so much at Anfield that he was rewarded with another contract in consecutive years after showing glimpses of his talent on Merseyside.
Reds boss Jurgen Klopp was so impressed with the teenager after a loan spell with Blackburn that he was placed straight into the team’s line-up to start the season, immediately impressing in the club’s double-win campaign Liverpool Cup.
However, a sudden ankle dislocation on matchday four against Leeds stunted his development, returning five months later in February to score against Cardiff in the FA Cup.
“It’s always nice to know that I’m going to be here for many more years,” Elliott told LiverpoolFC.com, who described him as “our diamond”.
“Which is always a good thing considering it’s my boyhood club and there’s nothing in this world that makes me happier and more excited than that.
“It’s been a big rollercoaster for me and my family and even for the club. So much has happened in the years I’ve been here.
“We’ve won so much already and I hope we can win a lot more, so just knowing I’m going to be here for a long time – like I said, it’s always a wonderful feeling for me and my family. [and] being Liverpool supporters, there is no better place in this world than playing for Liverpool and putting on the shirt and going out and playing for the team and the fans.
“Hopefully there will be many more memories to come, but I’m so excited to put pen to paper and be here much longer.”
England Under-21 featured in Liverpool’s opener of the new Premier League season, a 2-2 draw against former club Fulham, and starred as they prepared Mohamed Salah’s assist for Darwin Nunez’s first goal for the club.
And he may see even more minutes with the man he replaced that day, Thiago Alcantara, who has been out for at least six weeks with a hamstring injury.
Thiago joins England midfielders Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on the sidelines, leaving the Reds’ light in the center of the park, but it looks like the problem won’t be solved in the transfer market.
Despite strong claims of an offer from Liverpool in the Portuguese press, The Times have ruled out a move for Sporting CP midfielder Matheus Nunes, with the club concluding transfer business early.
The Reds’ problems should be eased with the return of Guinea midfielder Naby Keita against Crystal Palace this weekend after missing the Fulham clash through illness.
Highly rated 17-year-old Stefan Bajcetic could also see playing time soon after impacting Klopp by impressing in pre-season and for the club’s minor sides.
