Edmond Memorial women’s basketball star Avery Hjelmstad has committed to Utah.
Hjelmstad, the No. 46 recruit in the ESPN 2025 national rankings, announced his decision Tuesday. The 6-foot-1 shooting guard chose the Utes over many other programs, including Oklahoma State. Hjelmstad’s top eight schools were Utah, OSU, Texas Tech, Colorado, Iowa State, Duke, Arkansas and Kansas.

She had fun with her commitment by traveling to Salt Lake City to surprise Utah women’s basketball coach Lynne Roberts. The moment was captured in a Hjelmstad video uploaded Tuesday on Xformerly known as Twitter.
Hjelmstad, a four-star recruit, reached the Class 6A state semifinals two straight years with Edmond Memorial. She averaged 16.3 points and five rebounds per game last season as the Bulldogs went 23-4. Hjelmstad, who made the Oklahoman’s Big All-City second team, shot 44 percent from 3-point range and led Edmond Memorial with an 82 free throw percentage.
