Oklahoma State signed four-star guard Jeremiah Johnson before the program parted ways with head coach Mike Boynton. Hiring Steve Lutz and entering a new era doesn’t take Johnson away from the program, however.
Boynton’s departure from Stillwater shook things up. He was an incredible recruiter, and all the talent he brought to town was left in the transfer portal after the person who recruited them parted ways with the program, respectively.
But Johnson is not the same. On Monday, he reaffirmed his commitment to Marshall Scott of the Pistols Firing Blog.
“When I got to Oklahoma State, of course I came for who was coaching, but I also came for the community and I just wanted to play in an Oklahoma State jersey, I just always wanted to do that,” Johnson told the Pistols Firing Blog.
Johnson played basketball in Phoenix, Ariz. (Phoenix Prep), last season, although he is originally from Oklahoma City, having spent time playing Oklahoma Prep hoops. He also spent time with Overtime Elite.
The Cowboys didn’t completely abandon their roots by hiring Lutz and ushering in a new era. Oklahoma State’s new head coach has retained Keiton Page on his staff, which is a big recruiting boost.
“Coach Page is there as well, so even with the new coach coming in, me and Coach Page have had a good relationship with each other, where I know even with a new coach coming in, I know I’m always going to be treated the right way,” Johnson said.
Johnson told Pistols Firing Blog that the program holding Page played a big role in him committing to play his college basketball at Stillwater rather than requesting a release from his letter of intent to seek a new program to play for.
Looking ahead to the 2024-25 college basketball season, the Cowboys currently have four players. Johnson joins Bryce Thompson, Connor Dow and Jamyron Keller as those expected to wear an Oklahoma State jersey this fall. Retaining these four while building a roster around them would be a great starting point for Lutz and the rest of the staff.
Johnson is currently a top-10 player in Arizona, a top-30 shooter in the 2024 class and a top-150 player nationally. His addition to the Cowboys will be huge in the upcoming season.
