Deadline is delivering a record number of titles in the Contenders Film: Los Angeles lineup, which kicks off this morning live and in person at the DGA Theater on Sunset Boulevard.
The cast and creators of 29 films from 14 studios and streamers will take the stage today to discuss their awards season plans in front of a host of key Academy and Guild voters, as the season of congratulations on the movie moving forward in the fast lane.
If you can’t attend today’s event, you can follow via livestream, on Deadline.com and on our social media using the hashtag #DeadlineContenders.
As for the day, Carey Mulligan, Jennifer Connelly, Jessica Chastain, Guillermo del Toro and Janelle Monáe are just a small handful of performers who will have hit the Contenders stage before we even hit lunch break. Once we’re all fed, Luca Guadagnino, Claire Foy, Jennifer Lawrence, Angela Bassett and Park Chan-wook will steer us away from any suggestion of an afternoon doldrums.

But Contenders is also about discovery, so be on the lookout today for newcomers to the race whose careers seem set to blossom. Gabriel LaBelle is exceptional in his breakout role in The Fabelmans, and you have to spare a thought for the pressure an actor tasked with playing young Steven Spielberg — by Steven Spielberg — must have felt on his first day on set. It is on the extraordinarily accomplished shoulders of Danielle Deadwyler that Until rests, as she immerses us in the pain and determination of Grandma Till-Mobley’s fight for justice. And Austin Butler embodies the King in Baz Luhrmann Elvis that it is as if he were living again.
There are so many panels today that it is almost impossible to list them all. But what is clear is that cinema is alive and well, in all its forms. Of the explosion and the emphasis of Top Gun: Maverick to the surreal serenity of a donkey’s life in Poland’s Oscar entry HEYcinema is an art form that never ceases to demonstrate an exquisite range of stories large and small, global and personal, fantastic and grounded, tragic and funny.
See the full lineup and panel schedule below for the event, which this year is sponsored by American Pavilion, Aero, Eyepetizer, Final Draft, FYCit, Michters & Los Siete Misterios, UAR, Netflix and The Watford Group, Llc .
