Two days after hosting former Patriots star Trey Flowers for a workout, the Dolphins signed the veteran passer ahead of the 2022 season, according to ESPN. A two-time Super Bowl champion, Flowers has spent the past three years with the Lions, but is best known for his time in New England. Now he’s back in the AFC East, giving Miami some extra depth for the new year.
Flowers, 29, was originally a fourth-round draft pick by the Patriots in 2015, becoming a starter the following year. A defensive end/outside linebacker hybrid on Bill Belichick’s defense, he’s recorded at least 6.5 sacks in three consecutive seasons with New England. The Lions made him one of their biggest free agency investments of 2019, with Flowers signing a five-year, $90 million deal to reunite with former Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia in Detroit.
However, Flowers struggled to stand out after leaving the Patriots. After a strong first season that included seven sacks and two forced fumbles, he missed 19 combined games due to injury from 2020-21, totaling just 3.5 sacks.

He thinks he’ll play a back-up role in Miami’s passing rotation, behind starting linebackers Jaelan Phillips and Melvin Ingram, who also arrived this offseason. The team recently lost substitute Andrew Van Ginkel to an appendix problem.
