Danny Boyle to lead hip-hop version of The Matrix with immersive Free Your Mind dance performance in Manchester
Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle announced on Thursday that he is directing a hip-hop version of The Matrix for the inaugural show at a new £186million arts venue called Factory International in Manchester.
Free Your Mind – October 13, 2023 to November 5, 2023 – is described as an immersive mass performance featuring hundreds of local dancers and participants.
The Free Your Mind poster features the character Neo surrounded by styling agents Mr. Smith for the production, which was produced through a special arrangement with Warner Bros. Theater Ventures.

Tickets cost £10 to £40: Free Your Mind – from October 13, 2023 to November 5, 2023 – is described as an immersive mass performance featuring hundreds of local dancers and participants
“You know how it is, especially right now, you’re thinking, what’s going on?” the 65-year-old Scotsman described at Thursday’s press conference.
“It’s a project where we try to approach that…through dance, really.” It’s not too revealing, but it does reveal some of the ambition.
Free Your Mind reunited Danny with choreographer Kenrick ‘H2O’ Sandy and producer-composer Michael ‘Mikey J’ Asante MBE, with whom he worked during the opening ceremony of the Emmy-winning Olympic Games in 2012.

“I’ve seen these guys work before and the way they push people,” Boyle said.
“It was my first experience anyway. It’s how they push people to perform at the highest level. It was really liberating.
The Pistol director has praised the “amazing” Factory International – which will open next June – comparing it to the Turbine Hole at London’s Tate Modern.

Dany gushed“But it’s even better because it’s three venues and wherever you look you have to get involved and own it, really.”
Boyle has also brought on longtime collaborator Tracey Seaward to produce Free Your Mind as well as playwright Sabrina Mahfouz and artist Es Devlin.
