At the September 19 Student Association meeting, Alumni Association Vice President Taylor Swift Society addressed senators and approved a resolution to thank outgoing professor Dr. Scott Pederson.
Alumni Association:
Alumni Association Vice President Travis Jensen announced that the Alumni Association is setting up a mentorship program.
“This is going to have a huge impact on students, alumni, and the campus as a whole,” Jensen said.
The aim of the Alumni Association is to give students the opportunity to work alongside former students to facilitate the transition from school to their professional career.
“We recognize it can be daunting to make this transition,” Jensen said. “So having a guide walking by your side to provide their expertise and another level of support will hopefully help students take the next step in their career choice.”
The program has been in the works for about a year and a half, Jensen said, with a pilot program launching in the coming weeks for students in South Africa, honors students or students who have participated in the LeadState program. The Alumni Association is looking for these students as they have proven their professionalism throughout their time at SDSU. The pilot will be limited to between 30 and 50 students, but hopes the program will be available to all juniors and seniors next fall.
Taylor Swift Company:
The constitution of the Taylor Swift Society was unanimously approved by the Senate. The club has significant student participation with an attendance of 82 students at the last meeting and a mailing list with over 140 students. The club’s management plans to host movie nights, trivia nights, lyrical analysis and discussions of what’s next for Swift.
There is no membership fee at the moment, but the club plans to sell t-shirts.
Resolutions:
The Senate unanimously approved Resolution 22-1-R, entitled “Thank You Dr. Scott Pederson.” Pederson announced his retirement after 22 years at SDSU.
“Doc was an innovator for the college with the energy he brought to the anatomy program. He introduced the cadaver program to the university and helped SDSU become one of the few undergraduate programs that offers this opportunity to undergraduate students,” the bill states.
Other:
The Senate was sworn in to four new senators. Hannah Dayaget, Hayden Bentz, Erika Van Nieuwenhuyse and Claire Koenecke will now serve the entire campus.
