Taylor Swift is wrapping up a wild second week on “The Tortured Poets Department” album.
Hitsdailydouble.com reports that “Poets” has sold 455,000 copies, including streaming. Of this total, 125,000 are actual CDs, LPs and downloads.
This would bring Taylor’s total to 3 million copies, 1 million of which were hard sells. This week, streaming exceeded so-called physical figures.
An entire generation now has access to Taylor Swift’s music. They were influenced by it, will always remember it, quote it and try to play it on an instrument.
Everyone wants to know: will it last? Some of it will be, yes. Not the endless volumes of breakup songs. But some things will stay and one day – apart from the inevitable box sets with more lost tracks and demos, B-sides and extra lyrics – there will be a Greatest Hits with 12 songs. And these songs will survive all of this. “Lover”, “Anti-Hero”, “Blank Space”, “Shake it Off”, “You Have to Calm Down”, “Betty”, “Love Song” and “All Too Well” will be up to the task. And, I suppose, “Fortnight”.
