CARTERVILLE (WSIL) – What a weekend to be a Carterville Lion.
Today, the team returned to Carterville and was greeted by a crowd of fans to celebrate the girl’s historic season.
The lions won by 23 points in the last game of the 61-38 season against Riverdale to win the third trophy.
The team’s three elders won again in the last game of their high school career.
Megan Barton finishing with 17 points 7 rebounds.
Jeniah Thompson had a full game with 20 points 6 boards 3 assists.
Abbey Crain had 5 3 to contribute 15 points to the score.
Crain hit a final 3 in the final seconds to end his basketball career.
“It was great especially because I mean this is the last basketball game I’ll probably play unless something changes automatically, but it was just a big hit for me just one to finish, especially how memorable it was at the state tournament, “said Crain.
“The state has always been a dream and making a dream come true is quite special,” said Thompson. “It’s like I’m speechless, it’s still like settling in, but I’m glad we did, you know, ended our senior year on a high note.”
“I said to catch up to state 2020 and I kept my word,” said Barton.
Now one of these seniors, Jeniah Thompson has known head coach Matt Crain and daughter Abbey since grade 6 and his relationship with them goes far beyond basketball.
“I moved here in the summer to enter grade 6 and for the first two years I was like a stranger so to speak,” said Thompson. “I was just very calm and shy and Abbey and Coach Crain helped me out of my shell and they have been there for me from day one. Going to summer training, they would always take me to training if my mom had to work so they were definitely a big part of my trip and i am very happy to have them. “
