Blackburn reserved his spot in the FA Youth Cup semifinals on Friday night with a superb Arsenal beating.
The Rovers’ under-18s beat their North London counterparts 4-1 to join Chelsea, Manchester United and Man City in the final four of the tournament.
It was a great performance by Blackburn with Sam Burns opening and closing the scoring on either side of the strikes by D’Margio Wright-Phillips and Luke Brennan.
Arsenal were finally listed on the game sheet, but Mazeed Ogungbo’s injury time after Jordan Eastham was nothing more than a consolation goal.
Amid all the excitement of the Rovers, it was Wright-Phillips’ superb solo goal that really stood out.
And the strike, which went 2-0 overnight, was even more newsworthy, as it was signed against Arsenal by the grandson of one of their all-time legends – Ian Wright.
D’Margio Wright-Phillips is the son of former Chelsea, Man City and England winger Shaun, who in turn is the adopted son of Ian Wright.
Great things are expected of the 18-year-old right-hander, who is part of the Man City academic system.
He currently plays for Blackburn on a youth loan from City, joining Rovers in January until the end of May. It has also been capped at the under-16 and under-17 levels by England.
Speaking before Friday’s game, Wright-Phillips was asked about being raised in a family full of footballers.
“There is not as much pressure on you as people say,” the boy told iFollow Rovers. “I just want to work hard to get as good as they were and achieve what they both accomplished.
“They worked so hard to achieve what they did in the game, and that’s what I have to do too.
“It is very good to have them with me, because when I am down or have a bad game, I can always call them.
“They both give me advice and it’s great to know that you have a backup out there to help you get through the tough times.”
