Munich will be the city of the new IAA 2021
Berlin, 03 March 2020
The board of directors of VDA orders the association of the automobile industry with the final negotiations. The state capital of Bavaria impresses with attractive event venues, excellent transport infrastructure and expertise in organizing major events
Munich will be the fundamentally redesigned IAA site. The VDA’s board of directors decided today that the association will continue negotiations with the Bavarian capital in order to conclude a contract for the IAA from 2021 in the coming weeks.
“Munich prevailed over Berlin and Hamburg. The three cities that have been selected as sites have all presented very ambitious and convincing plans to further develop the IAA with VDA, ”said VDA President Hildegard Müller. “It was a very close race, for which I warmly thank the participants.”
The IAA will move from an automotive platform to a mobility platform. In addition to the fascination for cars, it should be the initial spark that the host city will become a smart city with intelligent traffic concepts and an innovative networking of modes of transport – sustainable and tailored to people’s needs. Munich and the concept of city offer the best conditions for this – and therefore for the restart of the IAA – in the opinion of the VDA board of directors.
Munich has also convinced it to make the city center and close to the city, very attractive places as places of events, the scene of the IAA. These locations must be linked to the modern exhibition center via a transfer route including priority tracks for environmentally friendly vehicles. In addition to the rooms, the VDA will bring the IAA to the streets, to the city and therefore directly to people.
As a solid technology and industrial site and home to many high-tech groups, start-ups and research institutes as well as innovative companies in the automotive industry, Munich is an excellent partner for realigning the IAA. The city is considered the main center of innovation in Germany with a unique wide range of industries.
The municipal administration has for several years been pursuing the development of a “smart city” in almost all areas of daily life, with an emphasis on sustainable mobility solutions. The Bavarian capital has an exceptionally good transport infrastructure and links to global destinations, as well as a solid expertise in the organization of major events.
The Automobile Industry Association thanks all the participating cities for their commitment and is convinced that the application process has already given significant impetus to the development of new concepts of sustainable transport on site.
