Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland became the first player to win the FedEx Cup three times after winning the PGA’s Tour Championship on Sunday.
The 33-year-old overturned a six-stroke lead from Scottie Scheffler to finish clear of the American and Sungjae Im.
McIlroy, a four-time major winner, shot a four-under 66 in the final round to finish at 21 under.
The Northern Irishman is handed $18m (£15.36m) in prize money after his fifth win of the season.
“What a week, what a day,” McIlroy told Sky Sports.
“I feel like Scottie deserves at least half of that. He’s a hell of a competitor. It was an honor to fight with him.”
Scheffler started the week with a six-stroke advantage over McIlroy as the players started the season-ending event on different scores determined by their place in the FedEx Cup standings.
The last pair both bogeyed the first hole but Scheffler dropped shots on the fourth and sixth, while McIlroy birdied on the third and made three more in a row from the fifth.
A poor bunker shot from Scheffler on the 18th sent the Masters champion rushing for a par to tie for second with South Korea’s Im, who tied McIlroy’s last round 66.
“I didn’t really give myself much of a chance at the start today, I thought six behind was going to be very hard to catch, but my good game and Scottie’s not so good game meant it was a ball game. before the return nine,” added McIlroy.
McIlroy has been one of the PGA Tour’s most vocal defenders during golf’s ongoing power struggle, and has been one of the leading voices in a meeting held earlier this month by the best players on the circuit to discuss the threat of LIV Golf.
After his triumph, he said: “I believe in the game of golf, I believe in this particular Tour, I believe in the players of this Tour.
“It’s the best place in the world to play golf, bar none, and I’ve played all over the world.
“It’s an incredibly proud moment for me, but it should also be an incredibly proud moment for the PGA Tour. They’ve had a tough time this year, but we’re getting through it and it was a show today.
“Two of the best players in the world are battling it out for the biggest prize on the PGA Tour and I hope everyone back home enjoyed it.”
