Double-digit cocktails can boost your rating. But other liquids too. “Pause before you go out” and ask yourself if you are going to be lenient or cautious, says Clark Wolf, a California-based food, restaurant and hospitality consultant. “Am I going to have bottled water and a double espresso or not?” Wolf says if he wants a caffeine fix, he’ll get it at a coffee shop, where it’s cheaper than dining out. Look for establishments that offer free still and sparkling water. Not only is it better for the environment, as the water is not trucked in and household water bottles can be reused, but pouring free water is a sign of hospitality. If you really want wine, beer or a cocktail, grab it before you go to the restaurant, or even after, to save money.
