BMW unveiled the new 2 Series earlier this month and it didn’t take too long for the M2 to partially leak online. Hailing from China, photos of the front bumper of the high-performance coupe appeared on social media days after the 2er debut. Some people – including yours – had doubts about the authenticity of these images, as the design of the front grille was significantly different from that of the regular 2 Series Coupe.
As it turns out, those photos of the front fairing of the Gen G87 M2 were accurate since our spies just spotted the fast coupe with the kidneys exposed. Just as the 3 Series Sedan has a different grille design than the M3, it looks like BMW will follow the same path to create a visual distinction between the 2 Series Coupe and the premium model. However, the 4 Series Coupe shares the controversial grille with the M4 Coupe, so design consistency does not appear to be a top priority for BMW.

Proving that there is still a tendency to be square in 2021, BMW is preparing rather bulky air intakes for the M2 to be accompanied by a more angular grip of the grille. It feels like the headlights are also different from those of the new 2 Series Coupé, although it could be the camouflage playing tricks on us.
Typical M mirrors similar to the M240i are seen on this prototype, as is the trunk lid spoiler similar to the M Performance model. The four tailpipes indicate that this 2 Series Coupe is at the top of the food chain, as are the large wheels and lowered sport suspension. Although this prototype does not have a carbon roof, we would expect warmer M2s to offer this option to reduce weight and lower the car’s center of gravity.
Pictures of the interior aren’t available in this new bundle, but we’re hopeful there’s a lever change in there, as none of the other 2 Series Coupe flavors have a manual transmission. Rumors say BMW will offer the new M2 with a three-pedal setup and RWD-only arrangement. The turbocharged inline-six (detuned S58) is believed to develop 490 hp and 406 lb-ft (550 Nm) before engineers raise the bar with hot derivatives like an M2 Competition.
Apart from the different front end and the extra oomph compared to the 2 series, the M2 will also have a different dashboard layout by adopting the side-by-side screen configuration seen in larger BMW models. This is not a speculation on our part because the recent spy shots (see above) depicted a test vehicle with the slightly curved glass panel housing the pair of screens for the iDrive 8 setup.
There will be a long wait for the new M2, as we hear that production will not begin until December 2022. BMW is expected to unveil the car a few months earlier, but deliveries to customers are unlikely to start before 2023. are expected to unveil the car a few months earlier. originate from the Leipzig plant in Germany, while the US-spec M2 would be manufactured at the San Luis Potosi plant in Mexico, where the normal Series 2 coupe is built. For the first time, the M2 would be offered in individual fancy colors.
