Spokane was still a power plant for the apple in 1920 and now it was on the verge of acquiring a gigantic warehouse of apples.
In a front page title generally reserved for world wars, the Spokane Daily Chronicle announced the construction of a four-story cold store, capable of holding 800 full cars (i.e. 800 train cars) of apples and other fruits, and expandable to 1,000 cars. It would have 1 1/2 million cubic feet of storage space.
The head of the cold storage company said that a plant of this size has “become a community necessity”.
“There are 20,000 cars of apples produced in this territory each year, but shippers cannot ship to Seattle for cold storage because of the rear transportation rates,” he said. “… The apple industry has reached a point where arrangements need to be made for cold storage in Spokane.”
Also from the rhythm of agriculture: Meanwhile, farmers hoped that Spokane would become a national center for another crop, potatoes. The newly organized Foothill Potato Growers ’Association has announced that it wants to develop and promote“ Spokane spuds ”.
The group’s leader said that experiments have shown that Spokane and Inland Northwest can lead almost any other region of the United States in the production of seed potatoes – if only farmers started planting them.
