Westworld has been canceled by HBO in a shock move that will leave many fans of the sci-fi drama disappointed as the creators hoped to wrap up the storyline for season five.
Season four wrapped just three months ago, with the finale airing on August 14, and viewers expected to hear more from the show starring Rachel Evan Wood, James Marsden and Aaron Paul.
The surprising decision to end the show abruptly is believed to be due to its high production budget as well as declining ratings, reports Variety.
It was reported that the first season of Westworld had a hefty $88 million budget, with that number rising to $107 million in season two.
Creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy are reportedly planning a season five of the series, based on the 1973 film of the same name.

The removal also comes as an “ongoing evaluation of programming” is underway with HBO’s new parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery.
Westworld had won an impressive nine Primetime Emmy awards throughout its run, along with a total of 54 nominations.
It was launched by HBO in 2016 as a prestige drama with high hopes of becoming another long-running show amid the success of Game of Thrones, and boasted a stellar cast with award-winning Anthony Hopkins. of an Oscar.
Ed Harris Jeffrey Wright and Thandiwe Newton were also part of the original cast list.
According to Variety’s report, Warner Bros. Discovery. attempted to save up to $3.5 billion over the next three years following its merger with HBO.
However, ratings-winning House of the Dragon would stay put, along with the popular teen drama series Euphoria.
Just last month, co-creator Jonathan Nolan – brother of acclaimed director Christopher Nolan – hinted at a fifth and final season of Westworld at New York Comic Con.
