Huawei has unveiled its latest line of flagship smartphones, the Mate 50 series, with impressive screen and camera specs.
Huawei celebrated the tenth anniversary of its first Mate smartphones with the launch of a pair of new additions to the lineup: the Huawei Mate 50 and Huawei Mate 50 Pro.
At the launch, Huawei Board Director Richard Yu said, “Over the past decade, the Mate series has consistently pushed the boundaries to make breakthrough innovations widely accessible. Each new generation of Mate smartphones has brought together a whole series of cutting-edge Huawei technologies. The Huawei Mate 50 series continues this proud heritage, introducing pioneering innovations and providing a breath of fresh air.
A key new specification for these new devices is the new XMAGE camera, which offers an adjustable aperture of 10 sizes (from f/1.4 to f/4.0). In Auto mode the aperture changes to match the identified scene and shooting scenario, but in Professional mode you can manually adjust the camera’s depth of field and degree of blur. Additionally, the periscope camera supports a zoom range of up to 200x.
The design has also seen significant changes, with the Space Ring camera module incorporating the elegant Clous de Paris patterned embossing. The glass version is available in silver or black, while a vegan leather version is also available in orange. The Kunlun glass is actually made up of 10 quadrillion-level nanocrystals and has been rated five-star drop resistance by SGS, while the phones also boast an IP68 water resistance rating.
Running on EMUI 13, these latest devices from Huawei will lack Google mobile services as all of the brand’s devices have since been banned by the US. However, this UI will offer some welcome new features, including SuperStorage, which removes duplicate files and compresses rarely used apps to preserve more space; and SuperHub, which allows users to temporarily store images, documents, and text, and share them in batches that are easily transferred between apps and devices. There’s also privacy protection on board, so the device automatically erases sensitive information from shared images, including location and time.
The Huawei Mate 50 Pro will be available in two variants; the one with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage costs €1299 (~£1170), and the one with 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage will cost €1399 (~£1260).
