Becca Harvey, who performs as Girlpuppy, imbues her music with a kaleidoscope of pop culture references. On his recently released debut album, When I’m alonethere are allusions to everything in the novel Daisy Jones and the Six, at The Twilight Saga: The New Moon, to actor Sam Rockwell. But there is a hidden meaning that she doesn’t want to dwell on. “There’s a lyric in ‘Swallow’ where I’m like, ‘We can watch all your movies. I’ll cry over every one of them,'” the 23-year-old told Bustle. ‘one I’ve never met, an actor. But it’s a secret [because] he could be achievable. »
While using his songs to get his picture taken is certainly a perk of the job, Harvey’s passion for the music is deeper than that. The indie rocker grew up on a steady diet of Taylor Swift and Hanna Montana, and had pop star ambitions from an early age. “I wanted a wireless microphone. I wanted sequined outfits. I wanted to run on a podium,” she says semi-sarcasticly. “There’s a song called ‘East Northumberland High’, on Hannah Montana who shaped things [for me]Actually.”
Yet Harvey’s tracks, which were recorded and released from home during the height of the pandemic, sound much more like bedroom pop than Hannah Montana’s. catchy bubblegum anthems in the arena. In fact, her sweet, ultra-feminine vocals and smart, cutting lyrics have led people to compare Girlpuppy to another singer-songwriter: Phoebe Bridgers.
Although covid restrictions were lifted by the time Harvey went to make her debut album, she persevered with her bedroom pop approach to recording, renting a house for 20 days with his bandmates atop Clinch Mountain in Thorn Hill, Tennessee. “The Airbnb was so high on a mountain, it was so far from anything. The grocery stores were 30 minutes or more away,” she says. “It was like a fever dream towards the end to be there. We were probably just delirious.
At the height of this delirium, Harvey found refuge in a familiar place: high school shows. “Every Sunday we had Euphoria night. Getting three men to sit and watch was too much fun.
