Drew Barrymore has revealed she hasn’t had an “intimate relationship” since splitting from Will Kopelman in 2016, while revealing how her “view on sex has really changed”.
On Sunday morning, the 47-year-old Blended star shared a photo of herself holding her laptop, with a caption encouraging fans to read a “very personal story” she wrote about practicing abstinence as a single mother.
“At nearly 48, I have very different feelings about the intimacy I had growing up. I didn’t have role model parents and engaged with people in an adult way from a young age! wrote the Golden Globe winner on her talk show blog.
Vulnerable: Drew Barrymore has revealed she hasn’t had an ‘intimate relationship’ since her split from Will Kopelman in 2016 while revealing how her ‘view of sex has really changed’
In the past, she’s said she’s been “looking for companionship, validation.” excitement, pleasure, hedonism, fun and adventure” through sex.
Since she doesn’t have a ‘time machine’ or a way to ‘change’ her story, the mother-of-two said she chose to ‘look at this from a positive angle’.
“After two children and a separation from their father that made me cautious, I had the pleasure of focusing on love for myself and my two daughters,” Barrymore continued. “I know that doesn’t include a man and haven’t for a while.”

She then credited her therapist with telling her, “Sex is not love!” It is the expression of love.
“I’ve searched all my life for words like that to help me understand the difference and now, thanks to him, I do,” the star noted. “And ever since I came into life as a single mom, I haven’t been able to have an intimate relationship.”
While she says she might “get into a relationship” in the near future, she insisted it “just wasn’t” her priority.
“I’m not a person who needs sex and has to go out and engage with people on that level,” Barrymore said. “I am someone who is deeply committed to promoting the way young girls, my daughters and myself as a woman, are meant to function in this world!”

Moreover, she confessed that a “relationship with a man has not been a priority for me for a very long time”.
“Some people may come out of a marriage or a relationship and find themselves in the near future in another relationship. There is nothing wrong with that! No way. I do not judge! I celebrate their journey!’ she says.
For her, however, she said she “needed to stay very single” as she mourned the “loss of a nuclear family” she “swore” she would have for her daughters.
She went on to conclude that she wished when she was younger that she “had the chastity and thoughtfulness” about intimacy that she was a 48-year-old woman.
“After two children and a separation from their father that made me cautious, I had the pleasure of focusing on love for myself and my two daughters,” Barrymore continued. ‘I know that doesn’t include a man and haven’t in a while’ (pictured in 2018)
“I wish my mom, dad or friends had taught me that there is a business of age-appropriateness and there is a way to be a stylish young lady!” she added.
Still, she joked that she was a “mean monkey who is rebellious and weird and comedic and wacky and doesn’t judge others and really doesn’t want anyone to be very involved” in her choices.
Barrymore then set the record straight that she doesn’t “hate sex”, but had the “epiphany that love and sex just aren’t the same thing”.
Last month, on an episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, the star revealed she could go “years” without having sex after learning that Andrew Garfield had abstained for six months for his role in the Silence movie.
Seemingly unimpressed with Andrew’s method acting practices, in preparation for his role as a priest in Martin Scorsese’s film, Drew said: “I was like, ‘Yeah, so?’ ‘
Ross then joked, “It’s the headline: ‘Drew can stay six months, it’s okay’.”
Focusing on her family: Additionally, she confessed that a “relationship with a man hasn’t been a priority for me for a very long time” (seen in 2013)
Drew corrected him and said she could easily abstain from sex for ‘years’ before adding, ‘What’s wrong with me that six months doesn’t seem like a very long time?
Method acting is a series of techniques that seek to encourage sincere performances by understanding a character’s emotions, with actors sometimes using their own experiences to relate to a character.
Drew said she understands why some actors practice method acting, adding that they have to “transform and fully commit” to a character while filming.
Earlier this year, Drew broke down in tears while discussing his love life with Queer Eye star Bobby Berk on CBS Mornings.

“I don’t know how to date kids,” the mother-of-two revealed as her voice cracked and her eyes watered.
‘I’m not there yet. I have two young daughters and I’m like…I don’t want to bring people home,” she continued as Berk held her hands.
The FLOWER Beauty added, “I think it would take me a long time to meet someone and get to know them before I could even introduce them to my daughters.”
After sharing the clip, King asked Barrymore what made her so emotional during the segment.

“I never said out loud that I didn’t know how to date kids,” she replied, then compared her dating process to her ex’s.
The father of “my children” has happily remarried the most wonderful woman in the world, Allie. My children have this extraordinary mother-in-law. And our processes have been different, and their side of the street is so functional, and whole, and happening. And I think I’ve been sidelined in a beautiful, honoring purgatory,” she said.
In 2020, the Charlie’s Angels actress said she’s not ‘closed for business but hasn’t had ‘exactly that mentality for the past five years’ to date.
She was recently married to Will Kopelman from 2012 to 2016; they have two daughters – Olive, 10, and Frankie, eight.
The Guess model was also married to Tom Green (2001–2002) and Jeremy Thomas (1994–1995).
The ET star has also dated Justin Long, Tom Green, Fabrizio Moretti and Luke Wilson.

Last year she reflected on how “difficult” it was to look for love on dating apps.
“It’s so hard on dating apps. I feel like I always swipe left because they’re too young [or] I don’t know who they are,” she told Gayle King and her CBS Mornings co-hosts Tony Dokoupil and Nate Burleson during their visit to The Drew Barrymore Show.
The performer added: “I dive in and out [of using them]. Once in a while, and then I freak out and jump.
Speaking of doing “terribly” on the apps, Drew claimed she “got up” and “didn’t match anyone.”
