The Los Angeles Lakers have signed guard Dennis Schröder, vice president of basketball operations and general manager Rob Pelinka announced. Per team policy, terms of the deal have not been released, although it is a one-year contract for the veteran’s minimum.
It marks a return to LA for Schroder, who played for the Lakers in 2020-21 but did not return after being turned down for a mid-season extension to test free agency.
Schroder previously hinted at returning to the Lakers and getting back together with LeBron James earlier this summer, and now he’s getting his wish.
“We are extremely happy to welcome Dennis Schröder back to the Lakers,” Pelinka said. “Not only do Dennis and Coach Ham share a player-manager history together, but they also reflect each other’s toughness mentality with a hugely competitive advantage. Dennis will add both depth and defensive presence on the ball to our core at guard. He’s also a proven scorer and playmaker. We’re really excited to have Dennis heading to camp and returning to work in Los Angeles after his very successful run with his national team this offseason.
After seeing his value dwindle significantly over the past year, Schroder returns to the Lakers seemingly humbled and ready to contribute in any way Ham asks of him:
At just 29 years old, Schroder still has plenty to do in the tank and can give the Lakers some play, dribbling penetration and defensive intensity.
The Lakers have a packed backcourt, however, as Schroder will be battling for minutes with Russell Westbrook, Patrick Beverley, Austin Reaves, Kendrick Nunn and Lonnie Walker IV as they are currently constructed.
Schroder not only knows Ham, but James and Davis as well, which will definitely be in the equation before training camp.
Westbrook comes off the bench?
In lieu of signing Schroder, it has also been reported that Ham are considering bringing Westbrook off the bench this season.
While it might make basketball sense, getting Westbrook to buy a bench role behind Beverley or Schroder will be a tough task for Ham. The Lakers are still believed to be involved in trade talks for Westbrook, so nothing is set in stone yet with just over a week to go until training camp begins.
