Cate Blanchett revealed a frightening medical fear she suffered when she was quarantined at her home in England.
The Australian actress and mother of four joined Julia Gillard, the former Australian Prime Minister, on her podcast last week, where she was asked about her time in quarantine in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.
In addition to helping her children with homework after the schools are closed, she revealed some details of the close call but said it was not as bad as it sounds.
“I had a chainsaw accident yesterday, which sounds very, very exciting, but it wasn’t,” said Blanchett, 51, on “A podcast of your own with Julia Gillard.”
“Other than the whim, we’re fine,” Blanchett assured the host without revealing exactly what she was doing with the powerful tool.
“Be very careful with this chainsaw. You have a very famous head, “replied Gillard. “I don’t think they’ll want to see cuts coming out.”
“I know, I want to keep it on my shoulders!” Said Blanchett laughing.
The Oscar-winning actress said she took a year off to help her older son with homework. Now, however, she joked that she “left with an 18 year old who really doesn’t want to have anything to do with me”.
Blanchett said, like many others, that life is “a little disconcerting” at the moment, but she knows that it is a “high class problem”.
Playing the role of teacher with her children – she also became a “kindergarten teacher” for her 5-year-old child – led her to think about the importance of educators and what they should be paid for.
Blanchett praised Finland, in particular, for paying its teachers “as much as lawyers and doctors”. She said she hopes countries will emerge from the global pandemic with more appreciation and funding for teachers.
“I have immense respect for the teaching profession,” said Blanchett, adding, “I hope teachers’ salaries will increase and their respect will be amplified by COVID-19.”
