Ben Chilwell has told talkSPORT how impressive new signing Wesley Fofana has been after starring in a debut win over West Ham.
The defender completed a long-awaited move to Stamford Bridge as the transfer deadline approached, making the switch from Leicester for £70million.
The fee makes Frenchman Fofana the third most expensive defender in football history behind Harry Maguire and Virgil van Dijk, putting a lot of pressure on the 21-year-old’s shoulders.
However, early signs are positive, with Blues manager Thomas Tuchel having such faith in his new signing that he threw him straight into the line-up days after signing.
Fofana then played the full 90 minutes alongside Thiago Silva and Kalidou Koulibaly, helping secure a 2-1 win over rivals West Ham thanks to late goals from Chilwell and Kai Havertz.
Left-back Chilwell managed to get a first runout alongside his new teammate and couldn’t believe his instant impact.
“Massive congratulations to Wes,” he said. “He has just arrived, he has trained with us twice.
“Then he starts today, his first game at Stamford Bridge, it was a brilliant performance from him and many more to come.
“Coming at such a young age and blending into the group so quickly is huge.
“He’s going to have a huge future at our club. I also think all the boys who have come have bought a mentality that they want to win.
“Everyone here wants to win and you have to bring in players who have the same mentality. Reaching the finals and winning the finals is what this club is about.
