Tom Wijman, analyst at Newzoo Talk with GamesIndustry has released its forecast for 2024. It predicts that Xbox will launch its own Android store sometime in 2024, which will later be released on Apple devices.
“Our prediction is that Xbox will launch an Android store in 2024 and then debut on Apple devices,” Wijman said. “Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard (including King) would position it against Apple and Google.
“The regulatory changes are an opportune moment because they impose lower limits on competing app stores. However, entering Apple’s closed App Store ecosystem may require additional intervention, which could hamper launches simultaneous application stores.”
Epic Games won its antitrust lawsuit against Google last month, which could lead to major changes on Android devices in the coming years.
Epic Games’ lawsuit was filed in 2020 and claims that Google created a monopoly with its Google Play Store on Android because more than 95% of Android apps were distributed through the store.
Epic’s main complaint is that Google takes a 30% share of the revenue from any app available on the Google Play Store and that apps must use Google Play’s own billing system. This meant that developers couldn’t make money without going through Google.
Epic and Google will meet with the judge this month to discuss possible solutions.
