R&B is experiencing a major resurgence, with the success of artists like Sonic Silk, summer walkerand Beyonce have a big impact in the music industry. Despite this, the American Music Awards have relatively odd criteria for the genre, departing mostly from “urban” appeal rather than actual R&B qualities, leading to some questionable inclusions in a list meant to honor the best of soul and music. R&B. Nonetheless, these categories are stacked in both quality and success, so let’s take a look at the possible winners in each.
Favorite Male R&B Artist
Three times winner in this category The weekend is looking to expand its number of awards. The pop/R&B crossover star has won the past two years while winning in 2015. Over the past year, The Weeknd has enjoyed success with his acclaimed album “Dawn FM,” as well as still a big hit. success with his previous records. “After Hours” and “Starboy”; “Die For You”, a track from 2016’s “Starboy”, is currently rising on the charts.
The Weeknd might be upset with Chris Brown, who has won this category twice and beat The Weeknd in 2016. However, The Weeknd has already beaten Brown twice in the past two years, so it’s safe to say that his fan support is bigger than that of Brown at this point. If not for these two, watch out for the buzzing viral sensation Brent Faiyazwho achieved great success this year with his latest album, “Wasteland”.
Favorite R&B Female Artist
For two years, Doja Cat managed to win this category, despite the fact that it really isn’t primarily R&B. Nonetheless, her huge crossover success has made her a highly regarded artist with, most importantly, a huge voting fan base. That said, this year Doja has its toughest competition yet: Beyonce. Queen Bey has already won the category six times before, the last in 2019. It’s safe to say that the two superstars will probably be close when voting, but I’m going to go ahead and predict that Beyoncé will take this one this year .
While Doja’s fan base may be younger and therefore more active in online voting, Beyoncé had a banner year with the success of her album “Renaissance,” which includes the hits “Cuff It” and ” Break My Soul”. Still, the residual love for Doja Cat and her “Planet Her” era could mean she’s taking it for a third year in a row, especially after her number one radio hits “Vegas” and “I Like You” with Post Malone. It will definitely be a close race.
Favorite R&B Song
This category could go two different ways. Last year’s winners Sonic Silk are nominated again here for their hit “Smokin’ Out The Window”. But while the song was a moderate hit, it’s not the biggest hit in the category, so they may not win again. Then you have Muni long‘s “Hrs and Hrs”, a viral hit that was hailed by many. However, since AMAs are fan-voted, smaller artists like Long usually have a harder time winning, and it doesn’t help that “Hrs and Hrs” isn’t the biggest song here in terms of pop appeal. cross.
The three heavy hitters here are the top 10 “Essence” hits of Assistant and Time“I Hate You” by SZA, and “Break My Soul” by Beyoncé. SZA’s song was very important, but there may be a bit left in 2021 to really have a big impact with the vote now. Then you have “Break My Soul”, which is the most recent and was a number one hit, but it had a muted chart in terms of longevity. And finally, there’s “Essence,” which has had tremendous longevity, but could suffer from SZA and Beyoncé being bigger names for American audiences. I’m going with Beyoncé here, but I think Wizkid and Tems are very, very close behind.
Favorite R&B Album
First and foremost, what is Duck do in this category? “Honestly, Nevermind” is nothing but dance, and it didn’t even have R&B radio hits. That said, it’s a difficult category, since all the other albums have been hits. Silk Sonic might be the first, as their album didn’t have much of an impact outside of adult R&B radio outside of the first two major singles. Summer Walker will also most likely have to take some time off, not for lack of success, but since her fanbase isn’t as big as The Weeknd and Beyoncé. As for these two, it could be argued that the success of “Dawn FM” has been very low-key, while “Renaissance” seemed like a highlight this year. I’ll go with Beyoncé here for a possible third win of the night, but I wouldn’t count anyone else out.
