Regarding the move, the actress told GMA that she regrets the way she decided to portray her character Isis, a cheerleader whose routines were stolen by the crew at a better-off school.
“I was given the whole range to do whatever I wanted with Isis in Bring It On,” Gabrielle said. “And I chose respectability and class and the high road because I felt that would make her appropriate, the right kind of black girl.” Black girls are not allowed to be angry, certainly not in a demonstrative way, and I muzzled her.
‘So last summer was the twentieth anniversary of Bring It On, and we do all these panels with Kristen Dunst and Peyton Reed our director and screenwriter, and we were talking about a sequel, and we’re all like, “We should do a sequel.” But this time it should focus on shamrocks and Isis and should be written by a black person, and I realize that I have to understand and recognize where I failed with Isis. When I was given full control, I made it appropriate.
You Got Anything Stronger was released on Tuesday.
