Ron Rivera and the Washington Redskins do not have many important looming free agents during this off-season, but they do have some big decisions to make along the offensive line. While everyone knows the Trent Williams drama, the two junior Washington offensive guards are also expected to strike at free will. Not so long ago, Ereck Flowers was considered one of the worst first-round landslides in recent memory, but the Redskins now want to bring it back.
In a recent appearance on Redskins Nation, Rivera made it clear that Washington wanted to bring back not only Brandon Scherff, but also Flowers.
“We will try to bring the two guards back,” Rivera told Larry Michael.
The former number 9 pick in the 2015 NFL Draft was released by the New York Giants in the middle of his fourth season in 2018, after struggling at left and right attack points. He was picked up by the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he started in left tackle for the rest of the year, but was not brought back in 2019. The Redskins took a pamphlet out of Flowers last season and decided to move him inside as a caretaker. He then started all 16 games and improved over the year.
Despite Williams ‘absence throughout the season and Scherff’s absence for five games due to injury, the Redskins’ offense line finished 13th in the league according to Pro Football Focus and their ranking of power.
Scherff is set to become one of the highest paid offensive guards in the league and if the Redskins end up keeping Williams, he will likely want a new contract as well. With flowers also awaiting a new deal, the Redskins could invest a lot of money in their offensive line during the off-season, but it looks like Rivera thinks it’s worth it.
“Once we understand this situation, we will have four of the five (runners) to know what will happen,” said Rivera. “Again, the looming question will always be Trent.”
