Electricity is quickly becoming the global solution to power the vehicles of tomorrow, and its implementation could radically change our way of life. Two-way charging turns vehicles into mobile charging stations, capable of delivering electricity to new locations. It’s a technology available on the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 that’s already proving useful as a new Asian Petrolhead video shows the crossover powering the Hyundai Porest RV.
Hyundai’s Vehicle to Load system is surprisingly easy to set up. The Ioniq has a V2L connector located in the floor of the cargo area that plugs into the crossover charging port. The next step is to take the 220 volt cord plugged into the motorhome and plug it into the V2L connector – and that’s it. In the car, the infotainment screen shows that the system is on and running, displaying “EV charge transfer: V2L”. The car can still run during load transfer, including air conditioner operation.

You wouldn’t know you are getting power from the crossover when you get into the motorhome. The fridge, air conditioning and all the lights work as you would expect. The Ioniq is also capable of charging the on-board battery of the motorhome. Transferring power from your EV to your RV may not be practical in all situations, as you may need to charge the EV after its battery is depleted. Still, we know the feature can come in handy in extreme cases.
Earlier this year, a very powerful frost toppled the Texas power grid. As temperatures plummeted and deadly power outages plagued the state, Ford asked dealers to loan F-150 hybrid pickup trucks with on-board electric generators so residents could power their homes. Trucks have proven to be very useful for many. Two-way charging is impressive, and it’s something that could become a standard feature on electric vehicles. It gives cars a new utility that we didn’t really have before.
