With just one tweet, Sony has plunged for the long haul PlayStation fans in nostalgia reminding them that, yes, they could indeed move the PlayStation logo to their beloved PS2 gaming system. Sony originally started the PlayStation line in 1994 with its first console version, followed by what will soon be four more generations of PlayStation game systems.
The PlayStation 2 was an extremely popular product at the time, and rivals the Nintendo Switch as the best-selling game console of all time. This record remains on the minds of many fans as they prepare for the upcoming PS5 release later this year. The PS5 should add 4K compatibility to the range of consoles while being backward compatible with the previous PS4 (and also very sold).
Recently, however, Sony used a quick video clip on the official PlayStation. Twitter to remind players of an old PS2 trick that many had forgotten – if they ever knew it. The PS2 disc player included a tiny original PlayStation logo in the style of its time, and although the logo has changed with each version of the console, including the new PS5 logo, the PS2 version remains a fan favorite. On this console, players could rotate the logo vertically or horizontally. Since the PS2 itself could be placed vertically or horizontally, this meant that the logo could be rotated to always face the right path for dedicated brand fans.
Subscribers responded to this reminder with surprised or sudden memories of their favorite PS2 games, as well as other console inventions that are now in the dark, like the famous PS2 memory cards. However, Sony had good reason to bring up this holiday of nostalgia at this particular time. March 4e was the 20e anniversary of PlayStation 2, and the official PlayStation Twitter account wanted to remind everyone of this fact, including asking fans to call their favorite games from the old console. Responses included popular titles like Metal Gear Solid 2, Silent Hill 2, Grand Theft Auto Vice City, Kingdom hearts, God of the war, The shadow of the colossus, and Final Fantasy X.
Birthday is reason enough to take a trip back in time for players old enough to remember the Playstation 2, but it would be nice if Sony also teased some secret little features for the PS5. So far, it doesn’t seem like the PS5 can go vertically, but there are a few hints that it could be completely upside down, or even stacked with multiple consoles for a powerful configuration. Next year, players may see Microsoft embark on a similar nostalgia path for the 20e Xbox anniversary – although without the spin logo trick, of course.
