Kieran Gibbs managed to get away with a seemingly blatant handball during West Brom’s clash with Wolves on Saturday.
In a moment that would have seemed more fitting during England’s test with Sri Lanka in Galle, West Brom full-back fumbled the ball with both hands, albeit by accident.
However, with hands raised and in an unnatural position, nothing was given by the referee on the pitch or the video assistant.
It wasn’t even a ‘seeing them given’ case – VAR rarely lets them go.
And describing the incident for talkSPORT, former England winger Trevor Sinclair couldn’t believe his eyes.
“100%. I just saw a replay. I don’t know why VAR isn’t doing anything about it, ”Sinclair said.
“It clearly hit Kieran Gibbs on his hands, three or four yards from goal, how it’s not a penalty, I don’t know.”
Meanwhile, Sam Matterface, commenting alongside Sinclair, criticized Premier League refereeing for lack of consistency with handball.
“How did VAR not notice this?” In the current laws of the game it is accidental but whatever, how the hell was it not given?
“We were called to a meeting in the fall when the Premier League told us it didn’t matter if it was accidental, if your hands are by your side and the ball touches them, it’s a penalty.
“The problem is the lack of consistency.”
