Switching from an older iPhone, or even an Android phone, to the iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro, or 12 Pro Max can be a tall order. It’s not just the change of a new smartphone – it can also have had a huge impact on your wallet. So whenever the device goes crazy, unresponsive, or doesn’t turn on, it’s understandable to be worried. But DFU mode can help you whenever you are in a difficult situation.
If you’re unfamiliar with DFU mode, which stands for device firmware upgrade mode, that’s probably a good thing. It is the last resort in trying to fix an iPhone that is bricked, unresponsive at all, won’t turn on or off properly, and other serious issues – right after trying a reset. hardware or have entered recovery mode.
Getting your iPhone into DFU mode isn’t something you should do lightly, but if your iPhone 12 is unresponsive and you’re running out of options, it might be your only hope. Fortunately, entering DFU mode is the same process from iPhone 8, you may already know it. However, if you are coming from another smartphone, you will need to learn the somewhat complex button combinations to enter DFU mode on your new model iPhone 12.

Warning – You are about to lose everything
As we mentioned above, entering DFU mode is a move of desperation. If all else has failed and you are forced to go into DFU mode, you will completely erase everything on your iPhone, which could be a problem if you haven’t backed up your photos, texts and other important data to your iCloud or your computer. Unfortunately, most people who enter DFU mode cannot use their iPhone, so it can be difficult to back it up if you are already at this stage, but if you are worried about it, use it as a last resort only.
Step 1: Plug your iPhone into your Mac or PC
To get started, connect your iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro, or 12 Pro Max to your computer using a Lightning to USB or Lightning to USB-C cable, depending on your computer model.
Step 2: unlock your iPhone
Once logged in, unlock your iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro or 12 Pro Max using your passcode or Face ID, if it is not already unlocked. You won’t be able to use DFU Mode if you don’t unlock your iPhone, especially if you see the “Unlock iPhone to use accessories” notification. If you don’t have an access code, skip this step.
Step 3: Open Finder or iTunes
On a computer running macOS Catalina (10.15 or later) or macOS Big Sur (11.0 or later), open a “Finder” window, then click “iPhone” (or whatever your iPhone is called) under Pitches in the sidebar.
If you’re using a Windows PC or macOS Mojave (10.14) or earlier, open iTunes. (Apple iTunes should be installed by default on a Mac, but you’ll need to install it on a Windows PC if you haven’t already.) If iTunes is already open on your computer, exit the application, then reopen it. Once iTunes is operational, click on your iPhone icon at the top of the window or on your iPhone name under Devices in the sidebar.
Step 4: Trust your computer
If this is the first time you’ve connected your iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro, or 12 Pro Max to your computer, or if you’ve recently reset your location and privacy settings or network settings on iPhone, you will have to “trust” your computer. If the computer is already approved, go to step 5.
To do this in the Finder, click “Trust”. For iTunes, click “Continue” instead.
Then on your iPhone, a prompt will appear on the screen as long as you are not on the lock screen. At this prompt, tap “Trust” and then enter your iPhone passcode to give your computer the right to access your iPhone data.
If you are using a computer that is not your own and you don’t feel comfortable accessing your iPhone 12 data, you may not trust the computer again after you are done. .
Step 5: Boot your iPhone into DFU mode
Now comes the fun part. When your iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro, or 12 Pro Max is connected to your computer with Finder or iTunes open, press the following buttons on your iPhone.
- Click it Turn up the sound button.
- Then quickly click on the Lower the volume button.
- Then quickly hold the button Side button.
- When the iPhone screen turns black, also hold the Lower the volume button without letting go Side button.
- After about 5 seconds, release the Side but hold the button Lower the volume button.
- Let go Lower the volume once you see the “recovery mode” prompt in Finder or iTunes on your computer. Your iPhone screen will remain black.
If you do only 1–3 above, the recovery mode prompt will still be open in Finder or iTunes on your computer; only it is strictly for recovery mode, not DFU mode. Recovery mode communicates with your iPhone’s bootloader (iBoot), while DFU mode talks directly with the bootrom (SecureROM). So, whenever recovery mode fails to fix your problem, DFU mode can save your day because it starts from the hardware side instead of the software side.
Your mac [or iTunes] detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You need to restore this iPhone before you can use it.
If you see the Apple logo appear on your iPhone screen at any time, wait for it to load iOS 14 on the iPhone, then unlock the device, reset your password, wait for Finder or iTunes to recognize it, then try step 5 again.
Exit DFU mode if you change your mind
For some reason, whenever you want to exit DFU mode without damaging your iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro or 12 Pro Max, you can. To exit DFU mode, perform the following actions on your iPhone.
- Click it Turn up the sound button.
- Then quickly click on the Lower the volume button.
- Then quickly hold the button Side for 5 to 10 seconds.
- Release it Side when you see the Apple logo on the iPhone screen.
After a few seconds, you should see your iPhone restart to iOS 14, and then you will need to enter your password as you would each time a restart occurs.
Step 6: Erase and Restore your iPhone
To restore your iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro or 12 Pro Max when it is in DFU mode, click on “Restore iPhone” under IPhone recovery mode, which will install the latest version of iOS 14 software on the iPhone. It may take several minutes, but your iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro, or 12 Pro Max should restart and be ready to go after the restore is successful.
