Manchester City youngster Rico Lewis is still floating after his Champions League goal against Sevilla.
Handed his first senior start by manager Pep Guardiola in last month’s clash with the Spaniards, Lewis – then just 17 years and 346 days old – scored a sensational goal to equalize City.
In the process, he became the youngest player to score on his first Champions League start, breaking the record previously held by Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema.
The goal capped off a marvelous all-around display from the Academy graduate, cheered on by Guardiola, his team-mates and an Etihad crowd of ability.
“My grandfather was watching the Etihad for the first time with my dad which made it perfect and my mum was at home jumping around in the living room,” Lewis told the City website.
“I couldn’t sleep that night. It was just amazing
“They’ve been with me all along and that I can give back to them making them proud – and the fact that I can just play football and they’re happy for me – I couldn’t wish for anything better.
“They messaged me after the game, and it made me feel 10 times better again because I knew they were proud of me.”
