A Portugal fan has taken his love for Cristiano Ronaldo to the next level, holding a sign saying he quit his job to watch his hero in Qatar.
The 2022 World Cup is set to be CR7’s final World Cup appearance, with him and his country looking to lift the trophy for the first time in their history.
Portugal started their World Cup campaign against Ghana in their Group H opener – live on talkSPORT – and they will be hoping their captain will be in top form for the competition.
As fans across the country began taking their seats at Stadium 974 on Thursday afternoon in support of their country, a fan’s sign caught the attention of the television camera.
After panning to a supporter wearing a giant Ronaldo face mask, the photo focused on a fan holding a large red sign with an image of the country icon on it, staring at the World Cup trophy.
But it’s what was written on it that fans online absolutely love.
In big white writing, the poster, held up by a fan in a Portuguese shirt, read: “Resigned from my job!! To attend the last dance of the GOAT.
He wasn’t the only one obviously desperate to see the Portuguese superstar either.
As soon as Ronaldo emerged from the tunnel a huge roar came from the Portuguese fans as they cheered on their star who has spent the past few weeks at the center of all the headlines.
No doubt most football fans will be eager to see how he fares at the World Cup, given that he is now without a club following the mutually agreed termination of his contract with Manchester United.
Speaking ahead of the match, match commentator and Man United fan Lianne Sanderson said she believed Ronaldo would shut out the noise off the pitch and be in top form for the Ghana clash.
“He’s the main man for Portugal. It wouldn’t surprise me if he scored two or three goals tonight,” the ex-Lioness star said.
This will be Cristiano Ronaldo’s fifth World Cup, and if he scores, he will become the first player to score in five editions of the competition.
Let’s hope he can, for the sake of his now unemployed super fan!
