If you are using YouTube music, you will be aware of the smart download feature built into the app. It’s basically a feature that downloads certain tracks offline whenever you’re connected to Wi-Fi in order to keep mobile data when you’re on the go. The YouTube app on Android is testing something similar on the video side. Smart uploads on the YouTube app will automatically download a bunch of videos every week based on an algorithm for the recommended videos.
As reported by 9to5Google, some European users received a prompt on their Android smartphone to try out the new smart download feature. Once you sign up to try it, the YouTube app will download a set of 20 videos every week whenever you are connected to a Wi-Fi network. The videos will be organized for you based on an algorithm. which probably works by analyzing your viewing history and the kinds of content you consume on the platform. The downloaded videos will be added to your offline playlist along with any other videos you may have manually downloaded in the app.

While the feature may seem unnecessary to a lot of people, it can be useful for those with limited mobile data who want to consume content while on the road or for someone who does not have regular access to an internet connection. . The screenshot also mentions that users with limited storage on their devices will be notified before any download so that appropriate action can be taken to free up space. This feature is currently only supported on the latest version of Android – Android 12.
Smart downloads are currently only available for a few people to try and only in specific regions. It’s also available only to YouTube Premium subscribers, and users who receive the prompt can sign up to try the feature until February 14. If you are one of the chosen ones you should see a banner when you open the YouTube app or you can try heading to Settings> Try new features to see if you can find the option there.
