LOS ANGELES, November 21, 2020 / PRNewswire / – Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas) and the Yorba Linda Water District (YLWD) today commemorated the installation of YLWD’s new natural gas-fired electricity generator located at the Elk Mountain Booster Pumping Station . The generator has been installed to provide back-up power in the event of a power failure due to forest fires, public safety power outages and other emergencies. Natural gas powered generators are one of the cleanest, most resilient and affordable energy solutions available for back-up power in an emergency.
In an emergency, such as an earthquake or forest fire, the generator produces 500 kWh of electricity to power three pumps that boost water to higher altitudes and keep water service at many. Yorba Linda’s 68,000 inhabitants as well as emergency services in the region.
“During forest fires, having a reliable water source is essential,” said YLWD president Phil hawkins. “People need water to put out fires. YLWD needs electricity to move water. The natural gas back-up generator adds that electrical reliability to our system. It gives first responders and residents better protection against the dangerous forest fires that afflict our community. ”
“I was happy to help YLWD obtain the necessary permits,” said Carlos Rodriguez, Yorba Linda City Council member. “As a member of the South Coast Air Quality Management District Board of Directors, I have had the privilege of participating in this clean energy project. This is a crucial step in ensuring Yorba Linda families and homes are protected from water emergencies with this back-up energy source. “
“Resilience tools like this natural gas-powered generator give our communities the support they need during an emergency event,” said Rasha Prince, director of customer energy solutions at SoCalGas. “This on-site generation system will help provide reliable, clean and affordable power to YLWD during grid outages caused by fires or other emergencies.”
To support high reliability and cost savings, YLWD has chosen to take advantage of a new tariff class from SoCalGas called Core Electric Generating Rate. This new tariff provides an affordable option for commercial customers of SoCalGas who require unrestricted services for power generation equipment.
