Cool, calm and collected

Look back at judge Justin Nelson in this successful three-point test. He keeps his cool, stays in position and climbs with a clear touch signal. It is always important to stay calm and under control when reporting a big game.

Contact with a defenseless receiver

The safety of Roughnecks Cody Brown has been reported for an illegal blow to the head / neck of a helpless receiver. Although it appears that Brown led with his shoulder on the spot, he contacted the De’Veon Smith receiver’s helmet during the follow-up. Smith caught the ball on the play, therefore the fault is applied to the half of the distance of the goal since the end of the race. Back judge Justin Nelson and field judge Glen Fucik appealed.

Quick trigger to start the game timer

The game clock seemed to have started in error when the Tampa Bay Vipers touched down just before half time. In the previous game, the Vipers won a first try, which stops the clock within two minutes of the XFL “comeback period”, and should restart five seconds after the ball has been spotted and ready. to play. However, Tampa Bay used a time-out after making the first attempt, while replay official Mike Chase determined whether the runner was within the goal line, or had scored a touchdown. Using this timeout, the timer should have started to snap during the next game, not after this five-second scout window. Tampa Bay was able to withdraw the game, but it would have been interesting to see what would have happened if it had not been, especially to be able to hear a conference that would have corrected the game clock. While an error has was committed at the start of the game clock, the crisis was avoided.

While this may be an innovative new timing rule for the XFL, we have already expressed our opinion that the NFL should avoid this rule like the plague.

QB Walker was down when he touched the ground, at close range

It was thought that quarterback P.J. Walker had been groping on this long run, however, since he dived forward, he is down on contact. When a runner dives forward, he will be treated in the same way as if he were sliding to abandon himself. So once a part of his body hits the ground, the ball is dead. Although Walker was not touched by this game, he is treated in the same way as if he gave up and, therefore, is in contact drop before any other continuous action. In addition, by throwing the ball on the ground, it is clear that Walker made no effort to move forward. According to the XFL 4-2-d-1 rule (NFL equivalent 7-2-d-1):

An official must declare the dead ball and the down finished when a runner declares himself by falling to the ground or kneeling and clearly making no immediate effort to advance.

Double forward pass leads to a gain of 15 yards

Dallas quarterback Landry Jones threw a forward pass which was pushed into his hands, and he threw a second forward pass to a wide receiver for a 15 yard gain. This game is legal under XFL rules, which allow a second forward pass provided that the first forward pass does not cross the line of scrimmage. If Jones’ pass crossed the line of scrimmage and was rejected, he would not be allowed to throw the ball again. It is also a reviewable aspect of a play if it were to be replayed.

Sorting double faults

Hear referee Brandon Cruse and his team discuss how to apply double faults. Lateral judge Eric Hartman committed a defensive foul for an illegal hit against a defenseless catcher, and central judge Tab Slaughter committed an offensive foul for illegal use of the hands. During the discussion, Cruse confirmed that the crew “did not have a 5/15 situation” referring to a double fault 5 against 15, when a simple penalty of five meters on a team (simple meaning unaccompanied by ‘loss of first automatic attempt) is replaced by a penalty of 15 yards on the other. The result of the game was a simple lag. Good communication between crew members is essential to ensure the correct application of sanctions.

First fault around 2 039;DQ

Goalkeeper center Ian Silberman has been reported for an unsportsmanlike foul of a dead ball after possession in an out of bounds fight after an interception by the Battlehawks. As in the NFL, this is Silberman’s first foul of this type in the category, and if he receives another, he will be disqualified from the match.

Several fouls on a kick by the kicking team

Tra Blake’s crew had to impose several faults on the outfielder team in this game. One foul was imposed for kick interference and the other was for an inadmissible member of the kick team in the field. . Although one occurred during the return and the other occurred before the return, only one can be applied. The ineligible field for men was refused and the kick interference was accepted. Also enjoy the close-up of the penalty flag courtesy of the Fox field camera team.

Replay the reversal of an incomplete pass

Replaying official Robert Lu quickly, but completely, reverses an incomplete pass in this clip. Judge James Wharrie and Lashell Nelson met on the field to decide on a tight grip at the incomplete touchline, but the reruns showed that the receiver had one foot in bounds (only one is required in XFL) and ball control.
