WWDC 2024 will feature Apple’s biggest update ever with AI-laden iOS 18 – PhoneArena

Because Apple is showing off the next version of iOS at WWDC, the developers conference is usually a must-attend annual event that takes place in June. In addition to showcasing new iOS features, hardware introductions often fight for attention over software. For example, last year’s conference featured Vision Pro, while previous years saw the first-generation Home Pod and iPhone SE unveiled. This year we could see new iPads revealed, including a new 12.9-inch iPad Air and possibly a refreshed iPad Pro line with OLED displays.
Unless Apple unveils a foldable iPhone, which we certainly don’t expect to happen in June, the big news from WWDC will be iOS 18. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says the update is one of the biggest in the history of iOS, largely due to two letters: AI. And mind-blowing AI isn’t something Apple wants to subject its customers to. So we highlighted late last year that the company was looking to strike deals with publishers to obtain the rights to use their publications to train its generative AI chatbot.
Something iPhone users have been looking forward to for years could happen this June, as Apple is expected to improve Siri by giving the old girl new AI capabilities based on Apple’s internal Ajax model. You might see Siri handle “more personalization and natural conversations.” And recent code found in the iOS 17.4 beta suggests that Ajax will also be used to summarize content on a user’s iPhone screen. Ajax could also be used on the Messages app to autocomplete sentences and answer questions.
A big question is whether the AI features offered on iOS 18 will be backwards compatible and made available to older iPhone models eligible to receive the update. Or, will these AI capabilities only work with the upcoming iPhone 16 lineup which will be powered by the 3nm A18 Bionic (iPhone16, iPhone16 Plus) and the 3nm A18 Pro (iPhone16 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max)?
We could see WWDC 2024 take place on any of the four Mondays in June (7th, 14th, 21st and 28th). Considering that last year, WWDC 2023 started on Monday, June 5, we could see WWDC 2024 take place on Monday, June 7. And you’ll probably want to see the keynote. If you’re using WWDC, you should probably install the Apple Developer app by tapping this link. The app is where you can stream some of the WWDC festivities.
