Wootten 150’s top high school basketball players: Stephon Castle, Sam Walters and more – The Athletic

MANSFIELD, Texas — Many of the nation’s top high school basketball players, mostly in the Class of 2023 but also some 2024 and even 2025 prospects, made their way to Camp Wootten 150 near Dallas this past weekend. Joe Wootten, president of the McDonald’s All-American game, organized the event in the presence of several members of the voting committee.

The camp setup made it easy for each player to show off their talent in hopes of earning an invite to the prestigious All-Star Game. Many stood out, but these are seven promising prospects that college basketball fans should know about in the near future.

The MVPs

Stephon Castle

• 6-foot-7, winger, Newton HS (Ga.) • Class of 2023 • Ranked #20 in 247Sports Composite • Committed to UConn

Castle was by far the best and most consistent player throughout the weekend. From the first exercises, he made it clear that this was the case. At 6-foot-7 and 217 pounds, with the mindset of a playmaker to control the tempo of a game, he presents plenty of challenges for opposing defenders, and his outside jumper has improved by compared to a year ago. He really impressed me in the three-on-three and five-on-five segments of camp because he always made the right play for himself and others.

Throughout the weekend, Castle turned out to be college-ready and made the biggest impression on me and several members of the voting committee. If you needed a bucket in endgame scenarios, Castle was your man. He leads a five-man UConn class that includes four four-star prospects. They should rock the Gampel clubhouse of the Huskies.

Ron Holland

• 6-foot-9, forward, Duncanville HS (Texas) • Class of 2023 • Ranked #10 in 247Sports Composite • Not entered

Ron Holland could become the most accomplished high school basketball player in Texas state history.
