Wolves interview ex-Watford boss Rob Edwards for manager job after Julen Lopetegui reluctantly turned down role

Wolves have interviewed Rob Edwards for their manager’s vacancy, according to talkSPORT.

Edwards was an interim player, coach and manager at Molineux and has a good relationship with owner Jeff Shi.

Rob Edwards held talks with Wolves to succeed Bruno Lage at Molineux

The 39-year-old spent four years at Wolves between 2004 and 2008 where he played 111 games in all competitions.

After retiring at the age of 30, Edwards returned to the Midlands side as Under-18 manager in 2013, before becoming first-team manager two years later.

And after then-boss Walter Zenga was sacked in September 2016, Edwards took charge of the club for two games before Paul Lambert arrived.

But he failed to win either game as his side were held 1-1 at Blackburn before losing 3-2 to Derby.

Since leaving in 2017, he has managed AFC Telford and the England U16s, before earning rave reviews at Forest Green Rovers.

He was named Ligue 2 Manager of the Season for the 2021/22 campaign after winning the Fourth Division title.

It earned him a move to Watford in the summer, but he was sacked in September after just 11 games with the Hornets languishing in tenth place in the Championship.

Wolves turned to Edwards after first-choice Julen Lopetegui reluctantly turned down the vacancy to succeed Bruno Lage.

The Spanish gaffer met with the Wolves hierarchy over the weekend but felt he couldn’t take the job as his elderly father is ill.

Other contenders for the managerial job include Mainz manager Bo Svensson.

It’s not just wolves Edwards has been talking to recently.

Edwards held preliminary talks with Championship side Middlesbrough last week.

Michael Carrick was Boro’s top priority, but the Manchester United legend snubbed the club.
