Wolff trusts Hamilton to stay "a pro" despite Mercedes F1’s difficulties

Mercedes’ performance has been up and down since the introduction of new ground effect regulations in F1 two years ago, and the 2024 season has so far illustrated this problem.

Hamilton called his W15 an “incredible car” after the first two Grands Prix in 2024, before admitting to being “the least confident ever” in the machine after testing for the Australian Grand Prix. He then had his “best” feeling of the year on Friday in Japan and secured second place in the Chinese sprint, but was then eliminated in Q1 at the same circuit.

Despite glimpses of speed, the seven-time world champion is yet to finish a Sunday F1 race in the top six this season. Wolff is nevertheless confident that his driver will remain diligent for the remainder of the campaign, particularly in his working relationship with teammate George Russell.

“I think Lewis is a pro and he has behaved that way so far, trying to keep his morale and that of the team up even if the results are not coming,” said the Austrian.

“I have no doubt that it will last. He has also given George his support.”

Hamilton himself said at the Japanese Grand Prix on Thursday that he wanted to stay focused on his current season with Mercedes, rather than his upcoming move to Ferrari.

“For now I want to finish strong here,” said the Briton. “So all my energy is devoted to this. Of course there is enthusiasm for the future. But right now we are going through a difficult time. This is my challenge.

“That’s where all my energy is going, to try to figure out how we can get back to the top. How can I work with the guys? How can I do better debriefs, give them better direction to fight again in front ?

“I’m a competitor first and foremost, so I want to win. Thinking about next year isn’t going to help me do that.”
