Wladimir Klitschko sent a public message on social media expressing his enthusiasm ahead of Anthony Joshua against Oleksandr Usyk.
The unified British heavyweight champion will defend his WBA, IBF and WBO belts against the mandatory Ukrainian challenger on Saturday night at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Due to his relationship with the two, Klitschko appears to stay on the fence.
He tweeted: “Exciting showdown, Anthony Joshua vs. Oleksandr Usyk fight.
“I look forward to a war between champions !! It makes me so excited.
Klitschko has known his Ukrainian compatriot Usyk for several years and trained with him towards the end of his career.
Once he retired, the long-reigning heavyweight king even agreed to return to the ring for a few more fighting sessions in order to help Usyk prepare for his stint in the division.
Klitschko fought AJ in 2017.
The pair shared a historic battle at Wembley Stadium which was preceded by a respectful build-up and followed by an equally respectful post-fight sequel.
Klitschko told the BBC a year after their fight: “You know what I’m proud of at the end of my career? I ended my career standing.
“Most importantly, I knew I was passing the torch to the younger, better, and strongest man.”
Even now the pair are on good terms and Klitschko told the National in 2020: “Joshua is a top athlete, a great fighter, an Olympic champion.
“More importantly, he’s a great guy, who perfectly carries the torch of this heavyweight champion image.
“I am proud to call him as a friend, even though we were [combatants]. And I think and I hope that eventually Joshua will unify all the belts. This is the final plan.
