Winona Ryder and Vanessa Paradis both defended Johnny Depp in their witness statements in the actor’s libel lawsuit against the publisher of The Sun newspaper.
Depp is suing News Group Newspapers for a 2018 article published by The Sun, which called him a “wife drummer” in reference to his marriage to Amber Heard, who divorced Depp in 2017.
Heard, who is The Sun’s star witness, claims Depp physically assaulted her throughout their relationship. Depp categorically denies these accusations and alleges that Heard is the one who physically assaulted him.
Depp called on his ex-partners, Ryder and Paradis, as witnesses to defend his character. They do not physically appear in court, but their witness statements have both been released.
Ryder: “ I considered him my best friend and as close to myself as to my family ”
Ryder, who was with Depp for four years from 1989 to 1993, began his statement: “I knew Johnny very well years ago. We were together as a couple for four years, and I considered him my best friend. , and also close to me as a family. ”
“I count our relationship to be one of the most important relationships in my life.”
“I understand that it is very important that I speak from my own experience, as I was obviously not there during her marriage to Amber, but in my experience, which was so completely different, I was absolutely shocked, confused and upset when I heard the charges against him. “
“The idea that he’s an incredibly violent person is the furthest thing from the Johnny that I knew and loved. I can’t understand these accusations. He was never, ever violent towards me. never been, never abusive at all towards me. He was never violent or abusive towards anyone I saw. I only really and honestly know him as a really good man – an incredibly loving, extremely caring guy who was so very protective of me and the people he loves, and I felt so, very secure with him. “
Ryder continued, “I don’t want to call anyone a liar but in my experience as Johnny, it’s impossible to believe such horrific allegations are true. I find it extremely upsetting to know him the way I do.”
Paradis said Heard’s statements were ‘distressing’
Meanwhile, Paradis, who was in a relationship with Depp from 1998 to 2012, said she had always “known Johnny to be a kind, caring, generous, non-violent person and father.”
While she also admitted that she didn’t know what had happened between Depp and Heard, Paradis wrote: “On movie sets the actors, directors and entire crews love her because he’s humble and respectful to everyone, besides being one of the best. actors we’ve seen. “
Paradis wrote that Heard’s accusations are nothing like the real Johnny I have known, and from my personal experience of several years, I can say that he was never violent or abusive towards me.
“I saw that these outrageous statements were really painful and also hurt his career because unfortunately people continued to believe these false facts,” Paradis wrote.
The libel case is ongoing
Depp and Heard married in 2015, but Heard filed for divorce the following year, alleging she had been abused at home by the Oscar-nominated actor. Depp denied the allegations and the case was settled out of court, with Heard receiving $ 7 million, which she donated to charity. A confidentiality provision was also inserted into the regulation which prevented them from speaking publicly about the relationship.
However, in 2018 Heard wrote an op-ed for the Washington Post claiming to be a victim of domestic violence. The editorial did not mention Depp by name, but Depp’s attorneys filed a $ 50 million libel action against the actress, alleging: “The editorial rested on the central premise that Ms Heard was a victim of domestic violence and that Mr. Depp had committed domestic violence against her. “
Depp went on to say that he himself had been a victim of domestic violence and has since spoken of several alleged incidents at the start of his trial against The Sun.
